The AAFL: A Football Coaches Dream
Feb 23rd, 2008 by Coach DeLorm
As a football coach, we are always looking for the next job and for new opportunities to advance our careers. The one way that I go about this is to scour the internet to find new leagues that are being developed. Given that these leagues are the on the minor league level, this means a different brand of player to relate and coach. I personally really enjoy this level due to the fact you deal with many different skill levels.
The newest minor league to open its doors is the All American Football League or the AAFL. This league comes with a different slant of the traditional idea of a minor league or semi-pro league.
- Teams will initially operate as divisions of League whose football operations will be run by a quasi-independent board and General Manager. Some of the League’s teams will be hosted by universities with Division IA football programs and other teams will play in independent venues. Games will be scheduled in the spring and early summer. The definition from the league site:
The season we begin this summer and draft recently took place last week. The surprise number on picks was Eric Crouch, the ex-Cornhusker and Hiesmen trophy winner. I like the slant that the league is taking, but with every summer league come with the competition for peoples time during the summer. There is also baseball and arena football to compete the sports fan dollar. As a football coach there might be volunteer or even paid coaching opportunities. It would be worth a look if you have the time.
Here is a video from a local news station in FL:
Either way this could be a great way to get in with college staffs or even open some doors for you to the pro level. Think of the AAFL as the Juco of the NFL.
