The Key to Becoming A Successful Football Coach
Feb 6th, 2008 by Coach DeLorm
As a football coach your have joined this profession for a number of reasons. I know personally, I love the high that comes from watching a player finally realizing their potential on the football field. For others it might be for the power and feeling of control that comes from shaping young minds and having to make those tough decisions during the game. Some do it just for the money. For whatever reason you became a football coach , there is one thing you must always do. Learn from those that came before you.
The game of American football has been around for close to a hundred years now, but not much has changed. The formations and equipment might have, but the game is still running, tackling, throwing, and catching. So you should not try to reinvent the wheel when you are starting out in the coaching profession, rather do some research and read as many books as you can get a hold of about the greats like Lombardi, Halas, Bear Bryant, and many others. One such coach is John McKissick who is now the most successful coach in American football history with 500+ wins. below is a nice video about him. He is old school, but that is what works for his program. Just like anything in life you need to find your own “voice” when entering the coaching profession. Be you and the players will see that you truly enjoy the game and teaching them.
