Things to Do at the End of a Football Season
Oct 22nd, 2007 by Coach DeLorm
I was thinking of writing a list for coaches that are winding down their seasons in the coming weeks of things to do before the players are done. So here you go:
- Thank the seniors and parents
- Meet setup a meeting with the incoming freshmen
- Have the players clean out lockers and locker room.
- Setup a time and place for the equipment to be checked back in.
- Make sure the end of the year party is setup and handouts available at last practice
- Make sure to have a coaches only party at the end of the season
- Prepare the off season training regiment.
- Look into coaching clinics for the coaches in the off season
- Evaluate the season including the overall usefulness of the offense and defensive schemes along with players individual contributions.
- Plan individual player meetings along with positional meetings with players where goals will be set for the up coming off season
- Take a minute to relax and reflect on the group of players and coaches that you worked with the past season.
The best attribute of ending a season, no matter the record, is the memories and bonds that have been forged over the past several months. Make sure as a coach you stop and look back at the players and coaches that made it possible. In the end, all football is about is the memories that you create as a coach for the fans and especially the players. Coaching is a constant process of trial and error with and ever changing environment. So remember it is not the record that matters at the end of the season it is the journey itself.
