D2 and D3 Finding A home on the Net

I came across this article on the D3dailydose blog about the ESPN article written about the popularity of the websites of both divisions of collegiate sports. In summary, the article talks about the creation of D2Football.com and D3Football.com. I seems that the D2 and D3 followers are taylor-made for internet usage. Since most of the colleges are in small to rural locations the media coverage is limited. Since the alumni is very loyal to these schools, the internet allows them a great platform to keep abreast of the sports happenings from where ever their lives have taken them.
One thing the article didn’t touch on was the exposure for the athletes. Take Danny Woodhead for Chadron State, he is poised to break the collegiate rushing record this year but i bet outside of the D2 family and the NFL scouting community nobody knows anything about him. That is where the internet could help a person get an opportunity to reach the next level. Or get more exposure for the college and even the conference.
With the new web 2.0 era, sports are a great medium to reach potential recruits and fans. This might lead to a some what even playing field in conferences with powerhouse teams. If the smaller or lesser programs utilize the web and social media and they could possibly get the inside track on recruits and boosters. Might I even throw in that high schools could get in on the buzz and create websites for their sports programs. You could even develop athlete profiles for upperclassmen including video clips article clippings and such. It would streamline recruiting and allow coaches in any sport to find viable athletes to fit their teams. Now don’t be taken my ideas… I at least want a cut.
